In a rare and unusual move the Ontario Government will invoke Section 33 of the Canadian Constitution/Charter of Rights and Freedoms to invoke it’s legislation. Bill 5. And my impression is that Premier Doug Ford will do this again to “get his way” in the Ontario Legislature. If, you want my advice I think he should have accepted the decision of the Judge (Edward Belobaba) who ruled that the legislation was not Constitutional and that it would have to be done at another time. With perhaps different wording. That’s the wise move. Because, as I said in an earlier post on this subject, the timing is not right to do this. It is in the middle of a Municipal Campaign that they are changing the rules. And some, myself included are upset. There was no need whatsoever to introduce this legislation at this time. And now, Premier Doug Ford has stepped on some people’s rights, to get what he wants. This is him being a dictator. And for what. Is it payback time?
I am not against smaller government,
But I agree as what Mayor John Tory said earlier today. You don’t change the rules in the middle of a game and you don’t use a hammer to squash a flee. This can be done and introduced after the Municipal election is over. No rush. No worry. No use of the Notwithstanding Clause. This will get worse. Because, Teachers’ Federations are also taking the Ontario Government to Court. This over the Government’s decision to use the Curriculum from 1997 to 2015. Which, excludes certain things like same sex families and cyber-bullying. I don’t think this Government should be taking any chances with these Powerful Teachers’ Unions. But any attempt to use that Section 33 of the Charter again and people will be of the opinion that he’ll use it over and over again, like it’s candy. That’s not good. And he, and that Government will be paying a price for it come Election Time. That’s in four years time. Sorry Doug, I’m a Conservative supporting voter, but, this is wrong. And if all you had to do was to wait for another municipal election with consultation from the people, you might have given yourself another mandate. Now all you can do is hope that you don’t have to use the Clause again against the Teachers Federation. That is a more wise move. A better one. Take Care.
