Hello everyone. You may want to ask yourself the question, how big and strong is our Armed Forces? Like, I as a former Soldier in the Canadian Army was very proud to March, Train and Fight for the Royal Regiment of Canada. Which was an infantry and medical Regiment. When I joined, I wanted to see what it was like (I was also being beaten up a lot in school), my Dad was also in and when he saw my interest, he asked if I wanted to join. That same night, I had a weapon called the FMC1 in my hands. A gas-powered rifle. You wouldn’t really know unless someone told you. Of all the things I’d seen over the next few years, I remember seeing how big the Regiment was. So many Soldiers, new recruits, week after week. I was one of them. I liked it a lot. I was also picked on a lot less in High School.
Today, that Regiment is still at Fort York Armories, but is a lot less. There is less money, less budget, fewer soldiers, less training. Canada’s Defense budget may seem like a lot, but trust me it isn’t. In fact, if you compare two small Countries like Canada and Australia you’ll find that Australia spent much, much more on its Defense than Canada has in about 50 years. Proud? I wouldn’t be. Some people have the misconception that we don’t need a Defense because there’s no crisis or any sort of emergency where we are needed in the World. And that’s a big mistake. Neither is Australia. In fact, the most recent “Emergency” that Aussie Forces participated in was the Tsunami/Earthquake in Indonesia in September 2018. If Canada had an Army, it could deploy just 1,000 troops to help those with the hurricanes that often happen in or near the State of Florida. But alas, not so much as a Soldier is sent to help in the Southern States of the U.S.
There is a big difference in policies, and politics in our Country and Australia when it comes to Defense Spending between our Country and Australia. And, the biggest difference is when it comes to results and equipment for our men and women who are in uniform. When it comes to National Defense, Australia has a nonpartisan policy. Any cursory examination of the Australian and British defence policy over the past FIVE DECADES will reveal that no matter the party in power–ie. Liberal/Conservative or Labour–defense policy remains constant. Which is why you see other Countries with bigger armies, bigger toys, faster jets, better trained pilots in jet fighters and better and more of everything than Canada. Including Australia, a smaller and less prosperous Nation. Here we have rich resources. We even have oil and gas reserves to fuel military equipment.
But our politicians over the past fifty years, since the days of Pierre Elliott Trudeau and liberals altogether that have ruined our Defense. Here, it’s politicians who once they get into power change the policy of our Defense and as a result, nothing gets built. Nothing to speak. The previous administration wanted to buy F-35 fighter jets. But of course the liberals opposed it, the media, including the government-funded CBC opposed it, and went on further to say the Harper Conservatives were treating our Veterans as poorly as Senior Citizens. The liberals, who would later be elected to government, cancelled the F-35’s. Bad idea. Instead, Our liberal government decided to buy “Used” F-18’s from Australia. These were older ones that the Australian Government were getting rid of because they, and many of our Allies were all buying brand new F-35 fighter jets. And, it’s important to note too, that when your friends buy new equipment, you should too. Because, Their fighter pilots are highly trained and skilled to fly along side with their own pilots as well as those from other Countries. Such as U.S. and Canadian pilots, who partake in the NORAD program. That’s a special agreement. That’s CF-18’s flying over American Airspace, and likewise. So, you may want to ask how we stack up against Australia in Defense? here it is:
Australia Defense Budget $32.4 billion. Canada $25 billion.
Air Force 14,120 full-time and 4,273 part-time. 477 Aircraft.
Canada has 258 Aircraft, 14,500 personnel,
Army. Australia has 80,000 Troops, Canada has 68,000 Troops.
Navy. Australia has 49 Warships, including 10 frigates, a destroyer, 8 Anzac class frigates two Adelaide class frigates and one Hobart class destroyer. There are 16,000 personnel.
Canadian Navy has 12 frigates, 4 submarines, 12 coastal defense vessels and unarmed training vessels. It has 8,500 personnel.
You should remember, liberals and Conservatives, will not agree on Defense spending. Before becoming PM, Justin Trudeau was on record to say this,
“A liberal government will immediately cancel the mismanaged $30 billion sole-sources deal for the F-35 stealth fighter jets, and save billions of dollars. In the largest procurement in Canadian history, the Harper government never explained why that plane is essential at the time.” Justin Trudeau.
Justin Trudeau who is now the Prime Minister says the previous Harper administration can’t explain why we needed this plane. So let me explain. We want this Stealth Fighter Jet because our Allies like the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Norway, Turkey, Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark will all be buying this Stealth Fighting Aircraft. And all these Countries will be working and training alongside each other. Get the picture? And so it probably made a lot of sense for a Conservative Government to come alongside its Allies and contribute to the same project. Also, Justin you said that this project is being mismanaged? so what was your idea? I’ll tell you, you bought the “Used” F-16’s from Australia to replace our current CF-18’s. I think that’s very badly managed because it’s the wrong headed decision made by a liberal Prime Minister. And it’s the same dumb decisions being made like in the past when those like Paul Martin, Jean Chretien, John Turner, and Pierre Trudeau twice were running things. No more Defense spending. Which makes Canada the laughing stock of the World. Even Australia spends more.
I will be presenting a video of the F-35 Stealth Fighter Jet. It is quite spectacular. It’s what our Allies fly. We should too. And, this can make us a proud people who are able to help our friends and neighbours. Which, I know our American friends are very strong, but, they can’t do everything can they? They need us once in a while.
